IT for Kids
Lesson plans and activities for developing computer skills
by Jo Stewart & Lew Cochrane
A 6-book series covering all the primary school years, providing teachers and students with a whole school IT teaching and learning program.
The books address key IT skills in accordance with seven technology competencies:
- computer operations
- graphics
- word processing
- the internet
- spreadsheets
- multimedia
Each unit is comprised of activities that either introduce or reinforce a skill, and which can also act as a springboard for further lessons.
Because student ability levels may differ significantly — affected by variables such as computer access, staff expertise and socioeconomic circumstances — the books can be used either prescriptively, as a grade-based program of teaching and learning activities, or flexibly by combining one or more books to provide remediation or extension as required.
Each book contains:
- a SKILLS SCOPE AND SEQUENCE CHART, which is central to the series and serves as a foundation for a developmental whole-school IT program, a programming guide and assessment checklist for teachers, and a self-assessment checklist for students
- TEACHER FOCUS pages that specify essential background information, skills to be taught, vocabulary applicable to the lesson, tips and tricks, and a suggested lesson procedure
- photocopiable STUDENT ACTIVITY WORKSHEETS, both theoretical and practical, with accompanying extension activities
- a double-paged ASSESSMENT ― based on Bloom’s revised taxonomy, and including appropriate higher order thinking tasks.
The authors each have over 20 years’ teaching experience, including long periods as IT co-ordinators and regional IT facilitators.

Using ICT in the Early Years
by John Siraj-Blatchford and Alex Morgan
In an increasingly technological world with growing curriculum demands for children to become technologically literate, many early years teachers feel lost at how to approach this topic.
This book, written by the foremost experts in the UK in Early Years ICT, is a step-by-step guide on how to teach young children a variety of ICT. Importantly, this book also answers what many teachers feel is a weakness of ICT by offering suggestions for using technology to develop children’s creative thinking and provide opportunities for outdoor play.
Many different types of ICT are explained through activities that even the most technophobic of practitioners can carry out — from work with simulation games, through to programmable toys and Interactive White Boards.
