Teaching Handwriting
Book 1: Developing beginning handwriting
Book 2: Moving from print to fluent cursive
by Deborah Davis & Chris Rawlins
Handwriting is a skill that permeates nearly every subject area, but most teachers have received little or no training on strategies for teaching handwriting, and may lack confidence when planning their handwriting lessons.
These two books provide teachers with a comprehensive guide to the teaching of handwriting development from Print to Cursive.
Each book contains a comprehensive reference section for teachers, together with photocopiable blackline masters for students to help them develop their skills. Many of the blackline masters can also be enlarged for use as classroom charts.
The reference section includes such topics as:
- sample letter to parents
- pencil hold
- selection of instruments
- sitting position
- consideration for the left-hander
- paper position
- Book 1 covers Patterning, Tracking, Lower case letters, Numerals, Mechanics of handwriting, Handwriting hints, and Consolidation activities.
- Book 2 covers Learning joins, Revising and defining joins, Competence with joins, the Mature writer, and Learning flourished writing.
- Both books have comprehensive glossaries.
The authors have worked as handwriting consultants for Education Queensland and spent many years inservicing teachers on the teaching of handwriting. They have written several successful handwriting textbooks and have a well deserved reputation as being experts in the field.
