Emergency Science – Surviving Medical Emergencies
The science behind the skeletal, respiratory and circulatory systems
This book connects science directly with the functioning of their own bodies and what can go wrong. The point of “knowing this stuff” will quickly become obvious as students see how emergency science can literally save lives, including the lives of loved ones and their own. The wide range of differentiated activities present concepts in fresh and appealing ways with a focus on three major body systems – skeletal, respiratory and circulatory. Some activities establish the context of emergency science by developing understanding of what is normal, while others cover potentially life-threatening situations and what to do about them. Students are actively engaged as they conduct experiments, draw and interpret graphs and tables, and complete class-based resources.
Brenda Greene gained an MSc from Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand and worked as a scientist, publishing papers on the genetics and conservation of New Zealand birds. She gained a Diploma in Teaching and Learning from Canterbury University, and taught science at the Orana Wildlife
Park and in Christchurch secondary schools. She enjoys hands-on science, and is always inventing new experiments for her students to do.
